Born in Surrey, Janes went on to study drawing and painting at the Slade School, etching at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and at the Royal College of Art. He settled in London. Janes was a painter, etcher and wood engraver of landscapes, town scenes and portraits. He is represented in several public collections and was elected A.R.E. in 1922 and R.E. in 1938. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club, the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers, as well as nationally and abroad. In 1932 and 1945, he had one man shows at the Beaux Arts Gallery in London.
