New Zealand based sculptor, Mike Norris was born in 1957 in Hampshire and moved to New Zealand in 2002. From a young age, Mike was fascinated by the natural world, disappearing for hours on end into the woods and meadows near his family home. Mike was given the Book of British Birds for his twelfth birthday which, he says, changed his life. Enthralled by the wonderful paintings in the book, he gave up drawing comic book characters and encouraged by his art teacher, Berrisford Hill, began to draw and paint the wildlife around him. He started to sculpt his favourite bird subjects in the 1990s and found this to be the medium that best allowed him artistic expression. In 2002 he travelled to New Zealand and began working on a group pf bronze sculptures of New Zealand birds. Leading New Zealand galleries in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown now represent him. In 2005 his sculpture of a New Zealand Grey Duck was accepted into the prestigious ‘Birds in Art' exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in the USA.
