| DAVID KIRK |
Born in 1960, David Kirk grew up in rural Somerset, this landscape continues to exert a strong influence on his work. Since graduating from the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford in 1983 he has been a professional painter. He is currently Head of the History of Art Department at Uppingham School and exhibits regularly in several London Galleries. He has retained his West Country connections, exhibiting for twenty years in Bath
David Kirk enjoys exploring the English Landscape, and the English way of life from a refreshingly original imaginative perspective. Often humorous, the work is reminiscent of the England of the recent yet singularly indefinable past, recaptured in an unsentimental, affectionate way. The paintings carry a strong narrative although one is ambiguous; the viewer placing their own interpretation on the picture. The dreamlike quality of many of his visions is emphasised by the fish-eye lens effect of the curving compositions. Always understated, the work is nostalgic, a delicate, restrained celebration of England and Englishness. This essence of style recalls the romantic landscape painters of the first half of the twentieth century with their idealised view of the British countryside.
