Born in 1946 in America, Jill was brought up in Essex and Kent. She studied at Colchester School of Art and Central School of Art and Design, London and went on to work as a designer in publishing both ‘in house' and freelance. Each year she visited St. Ives; the style of artists working in that area has an influence on her compositions and the flattened perspective of the still life subjects. In 1996 she began to develop painting full-time. An early influence on Jill's painting were visits to Great Bardfield during the 1950s where the many artists living in the village and nearby would open their houses and studios. Among them was Edward Bawden who would later teach at Colchester School of Art, where Jill went on to study. Holidays in the Lake District introduced Jill to the landscape that Ben and Winifred Nicholson drew and painted. Jill came across them again at Kettles Yard and in St. Ives, where she also met Bryan Pearce. His paintings and drawings reminded her that simplicity and honesty can shine out from an artist's work. Jill aims for this in her own paintings using the everyday objects she sees around her. Jill has exhibited widely and her work has been shown annually at the RWS Open, the RI Open, The RBA 09, The Royal Watercolour Society Spring Exhibition 2009 and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2009 amongst many others.
