Born in 1932, John served 40 years in the Royal Navy before choosing painting as his second career. As a midshipman, he was required to illustrate his journal, which provided the early stimulus for what was to become his passion.
His first show was held in Canada while he was stationed there in the 1970s and since 1982, exhibitions of his work have been held in London every two or three years. His pictures are owned by Her Majesty the Queen, the Royal Naval Submarine Museum, the Britannia Royal Naval College and by many private collectors. He is a Member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and also exhibits with the New English Art Club. John has chosen to paint subjects which have enriched his life in some way, however briefly. The location is important to John; it might be a once in a lifetime visit, or a much loved regular painting spot. His motivation comes from the sheer joy of painting, always dependent on the richness and subtlety of light and often inspired by travel. He paints mostly in oil, loving its versatility and responsiveness and admires the Impressionists and the modern British School
